JR developed a vigorous work ethic while shadowing his father, a journeyman ironworker. At 19, he joined the Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego and later served as an air traffic controller in Guam during the Korean War. After returning from service, JR laid roots in the state he immediately loved: California. His teaching career spanned several schools, including Santa Ynez Valley High School, Garden Grove High School, and La Quinta High School, where he inspired countless students in economics and civics. |
